Congratulations, Jeff Weaver!

Yeah, you’re 1-6. Your ERA is still 8.56. And it was against the Pittsburgh Pirates who aren’t exactly lighting it up. But kudos to you for the complete game shut out. Maybe things will go better for you now.

I missed the game but was nearby Safeco Field when the game ended. I could hear the cheers from the grocery store parking lot. He hasn’t been our favorite person around town but we can still appreciate a good thing when we see it. More than anything, I’m happy for the guy. The outing deserved the cheers the rattled the oranges off kilter and sent the apples rolling down the aisle.

Hey, Deirdre, you can thank me for Weaver’s performance. I have a deep secret admiration for him, and felt terrible for him. So I took RedSoxChick’s advice, which is to send mail to players in a slump.

I wrote him a long letter, telling him how much I loved what he did last year ,how he overcame major setbacks. You see, the way the brain works, we remember bad experiences more intensly than pleasant ones. So we tend to focus on the bad, not the good.

I just told him how great he really is. Sent the letter over 2 weeks ago, when he was on the DL, so he had time to read it.

I’m going to write a lot of letters to my Giants in the near future.
